Bodog Casino Seized

On Monday 27th February the US government moved in and seized the Bodog Casino domain, shutting the casino. This move has come about after a lengthy investigation by the Americans who said that $100 million in winnings came from illegal gambling at Bodog Casino.

The indictment for the legal action started on the 22nd February and on the 27th February the American government swooped in and took control of the Bodog Casino site shutting it down to everyone visiting.

Four people connected to Bodog Casino have been indicted by this legal action and these are Calvin Ayre (Bodog Owner) and the operators of the Bodog Casino who are James Philip, David Ferguson and Derrick Maloney. All four are Canadian nationals.

The investigation states that for the last 7 years, since 2005, over $100 million has been sent to players using the Bodog Casino site in Maryland and across the United States.

U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said of the investigation:

“Sports betting is illegal in Maryland, and federal law prohibits bookmakers from flouting that law simply because they are located outside the country,”

“Many of the harms that underlie gambling prohibitions are exacerbated when the enterprises operate over the internet without regulation.”

It is understood that currently the four Canadians are not in custody but if found guilty they can each face up to 25 years in prison, five for owning an illegal gambling business and a further 20 for money laundering through the money gained being from illegal means.

Many are wondering what the fate of Bodog Casino will be, especially given the move by United States law enforcement that saw 3 other large casino brands fall to the same fate last year.
